“Survival of the Dead,” George A Romero, 2009. In a quasi-sequel to Diary of the Dead, we follow a soldier team who fend off zombie hordes in the most spectacularly gory and comedic ways, later finding themselves embroiled in a family dispute about the zombies fate. Recommend!
“Good Time,” 2017, Safdie Brothers. A fast-paced, gut-wrenching, speedrun crime thriller starring Robert Pattinson as a morally-complicated, ever-clever brother who is as good at getting out of situations as he is at getting into them. Electric, tense, kaleidoscopic. Recommend.
“We Need to Talk About Kevin”, Dir Lynne Ramsay, 2011. An unsettling film about a troubled, sociopathic boy with a fraught relationship to his mother, which follows his development and ultimate heinous act. Discontinuous moments in his mother’s life depict this disturbing story.
Tucker & Dale VS Evil, Eli Craig, 2010. A pretty funny horror comedy starring the one and only Alan Tudyk, that turns normal class stereotypes on their head and it’s not clear who or what is evil really, even as blood flows. Gory, unorthodox, a fun watch. Strong recommend.
Diary of the Dead, George A. Romero, 2007, USA. A pretty good more recent Romero zombie film that feels like REC combined with some of his movies. Some cheesy characters, but generally interesting plot and scary, suspenseful moments. Romero still has it for sure. Recommend.
“Notes On An Appearance”, Ricky D’Ambrose, 2018. Two friends search for their lost friend, who was consumed by a political movement in New York. They explore his diaries, notes, postcards and spaces, in a minimalist reflection on the impressions we leave in the world when we go.
